My good friend Paul Kilgo brought a great looking deer antler with a large brow tine, and told me that his Grandson had given it to him. He asked if we could make him a knife and use it as a handle, but leave the brow tine on. He also requested a blade that could fillet a fish and bone a hog...hummmmmm.
I met with Mike Naylor, my knife expert, and we came up with a high carbon stainless blade that was thick enough on the back but had enough taper to the edge, then turning the antler to become a good grip. Well after twisting and trimming then turning a few times it finally came together.
Then came the sheath. I started with a heavier piece of leather than normal because of the weight and thickness of the blade then I had to double up on the spacers on the back side and taper the edge side to give it a snug fit. The blade fit very tight but I put a heavy keeper strap just in case.
Paul is the preacher of a wonderful Church, and his favorite verse is Isaiah 40.31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew thier strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run,and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. This inspired me to carve the eagle. Thanks to my wife Debra the eagle turned out great, it is pretty cool having an artist wife that can draw anything. She also did the final touches on the dye shading.
